Directions for Care After Silver Diamine Fluoride
Immediate Aftercare:
- No eating or drinking for 30 minutes: This allows the fluoride to fully penetrate and harden the treated area.
- Gentle brushing and flossing: Maintain good oral hygiene to prevent plaque buildup, which can hinder the effectiveness of SDF.
- Avoid salty foods for 24 hours: Salty foods can interfere with the SDF application.
- No hot liquids: Avoid hot liquids for 6 hours after fluoride varnish application.
- No brushing for 6 hours: If fluoride varnish was applied, it's best to wait for at least 6 hours before brushing to allow the varnish to set.
Longer-Term Aftercare:
- Temporary Discoloration: Gums or skin may experience temporary staining, which usually resolves within 1–2 weeks.
- Permanent Staining: The treated tooth will permanently darken, which is the desired effect.
- Follow-up appointments: It's important to schedule follow-up appointments to monitor the treated area and ensure it remains hardened.
- Continue good oral hygiene: Brushing and flossing twice a day are crucial for maintaining the effectiveness of SDF and preventing further decay.
